Teachers now have access to improved specialized medical care following an overhaul of the referral management system.
Minet Kenya, in collaboration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), streamlined the referral process under the TSC Teachers’ Medical Scheme.
This initiative ensures that beneficiaries requiring specialized treatments, procedures, tests, or medications receive timely referrals to designated hospitals.
After discussions with TSC, Minet designated 17 hospitals across the country as official referral centers.
A press statement issued on February 5 by Minet explained that the adjustments align with National Protocols for hospitals categorized as Levels 4, 5, or 6.
The Scheme has a panel of more than 800 medical service providers, of which only about 60 operate on a referral basis nationwide.
Minet sought to address concerns among teachers regarding changes in the panel of accredited medical facilities. It reaffirmed its commitment to continuously prioritizing high-quality healthcare for teachers and their dependents.
Teachers under the Scheme can still access medical services through accredited providers within the Scheme.
The Scheme includes 487 private hospitals, 146 public hospitals, 133 mission hospitals, and 63 anchor clinics managed by Bliss Healthcare.
These facilities offer a range of medical services, including inpatient, outpatient, dental, optical, and maternity care. The hospitals are classified under different levels, including 4, 3B, 2, 3A, 5, 6B, 6A, and 4B.
Introduced in 2015, the Scheme was implemented to address the inadequacies of medical allowances for teachers.
It is structured to cater to the unique healthcare needs of teachers and their families. Beneficiaries under the Scheme can access IVF treatment at the county level, overseas medical treatment, and round-the-clock psychological tele-counselling services.
The Minet-TSC contract, renewed in 2022 for a three-year period, currently serves over one million teachers and their dependents.
The Scheme records approximately 7,000 outpatient visits daily, 300 new hospitalizations per day, 400 daily dental cases, and 400 optical cases every day.
This extensive coverage underscores the critical role the Scheme plays in ensuring teachers receive quality healthcare services nationwide.
